Teachers Learn First Hand the Importance of Science at Area Nature Center.
On Monday morning, July 23rd and 24th, teachers from schools throughout the region learned first hand that science is something do, not something you read about from a book. An overgrown pasture at the Zaepfel Nature Preserve, just north of Napoli, NY, provided the setting. Field Ornithologist Rick White and Tom LeBlanc of the Pfeiffer Nature Center in Portville provided the expertise. the subject was a scientific study of birds that use this habitat for breeding as part of an ongoing, nationwide project called Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship (MAPS.)

What was once a derelict parcel of land is being transformed into a combination trailhead and park thereby creating a new asset within its small village that is the Cattaraugus County seat.

NAPOLI – The area formerly known as Enchanted Lake has been named the Zaepfel Nature Sanctuary and Research Center.
The Cattaraugus Local Development Corporation (CLDC) has singed a license agreement with James A. Zaepfel to use his name in connection with the land he donated to CLDC in November 1999.

ALBANY - The Cattaraugus Local Development Corporation received the Green-way and Community Trail Innovation Award from New York Park and Conservation Association (NYPCA), a statewide citizens conservation organization, for its work to create the Iroquois Recreation Trail, a 12-mile multiuse trail from Salamanca city line to the Village of Cattaraugus.
