Former Railroad Station Site in Little Valley has New Use - County Chronicle

"Former Railroad Station Site in Little Valley has New Use" from the Thursday, August 30, 2001 issue of the County Chronicle

LITTLE VALLEY – Site of the former train station at the end of Main Street in the Village of Little Valley has been a flurry of activity for the last few weeks. What was once a derelict parcel of land is being transformed into a combination trailhead and park thereby creating a new asset within its small village that is the Cattaraugus County seat.

All this activity is related to the "Rails-to-Trails" Project that will create a 12 mile hiking, biking, horse and snow mobile trail from the Salamanca City line to the Village of Cattaraugus.

A 24' x 48' pavilion has been constructed over the last three weeks. This structure has been designed with a hip roof and shingled with red "scalloped" Victorian shingles to resemble a railroad station.

Another feature of this site is a 12' x 18' cedar shake roofed gazebo, which has already been installed. A second octagonal cedar shake roofed gazebo will be added in the next few weeks. A "Friendship arch" will be erected over the trail. Landscaping, picnic tables, park benches, shrubs and trees will be added as the project progresses.

Sixty percent of the funding for this project is from a grant provided by the NYS Office of parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. This funding covers the basic material costs of the project. The remaining costs and labor to complete the site is being provided by: members of S.T.A.R.T. (Southern Tier Rails-to-Trails), the Cattaraugus Local Development Corporation, the village of Little Valley (A special "Thank You" to Mayor Norm Marsh, Bob Milks and the Village of Little Valley Electric Company), John Charlesworth Jr. and generous members of several snowmobile clubs and businesses.

Once this park/trailhead is completed the community and region will have pleasant enjoyment of this picturesque area which they can now utilize for family gatherings, picnics and reunions.

"This is a project which underscores the quality of life in a small rural community" stated Rick LeFeber, Executive Director of the Cattaraugus Local Development Corporation.
